Importance of Backlinks in Search Engine Optimization

I want to share a little information about Backlinks - An Importat scope of Search Engine Optimization.

For those of you new to SEO, you may be wondering what are backlinks is, and why they are important. Backlinks have become so important to the scope of Search Engine Optimization, that they have become some of the main building blocks to good SEO.

What are "backlinks"? Backlinks are links that are directed towards your website. Also knows as Inbound links (IBL's). The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node. Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.

In understandable language - Backlinks are hyperlinks that point to your website and are found on other peoples sites. Google and other search engines use these links to determine how important your website is. When trying to gage the important of back links in SEO, it is smart to keep in mind which search engine you are competing in. Google counts back links much more than Yahoo, although both take them into account. Google especially gives credit to the websites that receive a good number of back links from a variety of different websites.

The number of backlinks coming into a website indicates the popularity and importance of the site. As someone performs a search query, some search engines, specifically Google, will give higher pagerank to websites that have a high number of quality inbound links because they consider those sites to be more relevant than others.

The Top Three backlink criteria plays critical factor for getting ranked top in SEO:

1) High Value Links: Establish your links with websites which have a high Page Rank value than your website. A website that is linked to by many sites with high PageRank receives a high rank itself.

2) Keyword Relevancy – Make sure the links back to your website are relevant to the page content. Anchor text, Title & Meta Tags, and Content all play a valuable role and should be addressed before creating the link.

3) Avoid NoFollow – Avoid backlinks with Nofollow in the HTML attributes of website. There is no use of NoFollow backlinks as it is not recognised by search engines as quality baclinks to website and also doesn't help in indexing of website in search engine result page.

Link your website with DoFollow backlinking websites for more quality backlinks which are given more importance by search engines.

SEO Factors and SEO Mistakes

Search Engine Optimization refers to the process involved in making improvements and changes to webpages so that they conform to the SEARCH CRITERIA utilized by search engines to rank and position listings. It is one of the most effective website promotion (Levels of Search Engine Promotion) techniques.

SEO Factors to be considered :

  • Most indexing spiders can only read text.
  • They determine ranking based on where you place your prime "keyword phrases", i.e. the terms used to conduct a search.
  • Head, title, and meta tags (include descriptions, keywords, and copyright info).
  • Incorporating body text that supports targeted keywords.
  • Converting dynamic web pages (asp, jsp) to allow for reading by search engine robots/ spiders.
  • Rewriting or copy writing to ensure the content supports the keyword phrases.
  • Reducing source code without compromising website functionality

 Most Common SEO Mistakes :

  • Keyword Stuffing: Putting the same keyword again and again or using hundred different spellings or tenses of the same keywords in your keyword meta tag is known as keyword stuffing.
  • ALT Tags: Do not forget to add ALT tag while using images in your website. You can use your targeted keywords also in ALT tags. It makes your website accessible for search engine spiders.
  • Cloaking: Cloaking is a technique used by some webmasters to display different pages to the search engine spiders than the ones normal visitors see. You should always avoid any form of cloaking as it strongly forbidden by most major search engines now.
  • Redirects: Redirect is used to re-route users from one URL to another and search engines consider it as you are trying to trick them. You must avoid it, if necessary then use only ‘301 redirect’ which is the safest method to redirect.
  • Anchor Text of Inbound links: Having a lot of inbound links is not enough but the anchor text pointing to these links is also very important. The anchor text should be targeted to your main keywords.

SEO Definitions - SEO Abbreviations - SEO Updates

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search engine optimization is the modification of a website for the purpose of improving its natural Rank on Search Engine Results Pages. This is done through a combination of SEO strategies such as directory and search engine Submission, website optimization, content writing and improved Link quality. Please see Our SEO Services for details.

Search Engine
A search engine is a website that enables users to Query an Index of stored webpages gathered by a Crawler for information relevant to specific criteria expressed via a Keyword or Search Terms. The Rank of information/websites on the corresponding Search Engine Results Pages is determined by relevancy as measured by the search engine’s Algorithm and/or payment made to the search engine by indexed sites. Sites ranked solely by relevancy are known as Natural Listings or Organic Listings in contrast to Paid Listings.

Also known as search terms or query terms, keywords are the word(s) or phrase(s) a user enters into a search engine’s Query box. A Search Engine Results Page (SERP) ranks indexed sites according to how relevant the Search Engine deems them to the searched keywords. One of the most important SEO Strategies companies can employ is to optimize their site pages with content that contains targeted keywords relevant to their products or industry.

Search Engine Results Page (SERPs)
Also known as a results page, the search engine results page is the collection of ranked Listings displayed in response to a search engine Query.

Search Engine Positioning
The term search engine positioning can be used in two different ways. The first is to describe the ordering process of indexed websites being ranked by a search engine Algorithm in response to a Query. The second refers to the use of Search Engine Optimization to achieve a higher search engine Position.

Page Rank (or PR)
PageRank is a link analysis algorithm developed by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. A number from one (lowest) to ten (highest) is assigned to a webpage as a measure of its importance, specifically the likelihood that a user will arrive at that page by randomly clicking Links. PageRank is not the same thing as Rank.

Also known as back link, backward link, or inbound links, backlinks are all of the links on other websites that direct the users who click on them to your site. Backlinks can significantly improve your site’s search rankings, particularly if they contain Anchor Text keywords relevant to your site and are located on sites with high Page Rank.

Outbound Links
Outbound links are all links from a particular webpage that lead to other pages, including pages in the same domain. An excessive number of outbound links can damage a site’s Search Engine Positioning because a Spider may perceive it as a Link Farm.

SEO Specialist
Also known as Internet marketing consultant or SEO professional, SEO specialists use their knowledge of Search Engine Optimization Strategy to improve their clients’ Position and Page Rank.

Link Popularity
Link popularity is the measure of how popular a webpage is by the number of Backlinks it has. However, link popularity is not solely a matter of quantity. Page Rank is achieved when Backlinks are located on reputable, relevant sites rather than so-called Link Farms. Most search engines use link popularity as a factor in their Algorithmic Results.

Also known as robots exclusion protocol, Robots.txt is a text file stored in a site’s root directory that tells a search engine Crawler which site pages and sub-folders should not be included in the search engine Index.

Social Media Optimization
its uses for mouth marketing the website by using social networking sites. Social media optimization (SMO) is a set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
Search engine marketing is an inclusive term for all techniques used to market a website via search engines, including Pay-Per-Click advertising and Natural Search Engine Optimization.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC)
Also known as cost-per-click or pay-for-performance, pay-per-click is an advertising revenue system used by search engines and ad networks in which advertising companies pay an agreed amount for each click of their ads. This Click-Through Rate-based payment structure is considered by some advertisers to be more cost-effective than the Cost-Per-Thousand payment structure, but it has at times led to Click Fraud.

Cost-Per-Acquisition (CPA)
Cost-per-acquisition (CPA) is a return on investment model in which return is measured by dividing total click/marketing costs by the number of Conversions achieved. Total acquisition costs ÷ number of conversions = CPA. CPA is also used as a synonym for Cost-Per-Action.

Cost-Per-Action (CPA)
In a cost-per-action advertising revenue system, advertisers are charged a Conversion-based fee, i.e. each time a user buys a product, opens an account, or requests a free trial. CPA is also known as cost-per-acquisition, though the term cost-per-acquisition can be confusing because it also refers to a return on investment model.

Cost-Per-Click (CPC)
Also known as pay-per-click or pay-for-performance, cost-per-click is an advertising revenue system used by search engines and ad networks in which advertising companies pay an agreed amount for each click of their ads. This Click-Through Rate-based payment structure is considered by some advertisers to be more cost-effective than the Cost-Per-Thousand payment structure, but it can at times lead to Click Fraud.

Cost-Per-Mille (CPM)
Also known as cost-per-impression or CPM for cost-per-mille (mille is the Latin word for thousand), cost-per-thousand is an advertising revenue system used by search engines and ad networks in which advertising companies pay an agreed amount for every 1,000 users who see their ads, regardless of whether a click-through or conversion is achieved. CPM is typically used for Banner Ad sales, while Cost-Per-Click is typically used for text link advertising.

Google Search Engine Optimization Factors

There are many SEO factors that Google uses to rank pages in the Google search results page (SERPs). I would like to share some TOP Search Engine Optimization Factors that Google mainly focus while positioning in results page.

With the latest search engine spiders updated settings, many people find their sites no longer have the high rankings they had for so long enjoyed prior to the latest Google update.

So, the sites that lost these rankings are scrambling to find some answers as to why their site dropped or lost the ranking. While it's my business to know the intricacies of how this particular update impacted the search algorithm, there are some common ground points that if you apply these to all of your sites, you should be able to survive any update intact.

* Proper naming structure
* Use hyphens, not underscores when you name a page file
* Name your page titles with your keywords if possible
* Make sure your keyword phrase is included in your H1 tags
* Use text links where possible
* Don't optimize for more than 3 keywords per page
* In any product image, be sure to use the alt tag
* Don't forget about meta tags
* Always have a sitemap
* Always include a robots.txt file
* Don't use hidden text
* Make sure your site has an error handling page
* Create a Google Sitemap and submit it to them (This is in addition to a typical sitemap)
* Offload all your js and css code
* If you must use a re-direct, be sure it's server side, not with a meta refresh tag

Be sure to follow these simple guidelines and you won't need to worry too much anytime Google has an update and makes your website rank high in search engine results page for the desired keywords - your site will not be impacted by any filters that are checking for spamming, hidden text, or anything that resembles cloaking.
